
How to Synthesize Sources in a Literature Review (Step-by-Step, With Examples)

Synthesis is the one skill that separates a real literature review from a list of summaries. Here is how to do it, with a matrix you can copy and a worked before-and-after example.
Most literature reviews that get sent back for revision share the same problem. The student has read plenty of papers and written a paragraph about each one, but the review reads like a stack of index cards. Paper one says this. Paper two says that. Paper three found something else. Each summary is fine on its own, yet the whole thing goes nowhere.
What supervisors are actually looking for is synthesis: the point where you stop reporting sources one at a time and start showing how they speak to each other. Synthesis is where your review stops being a reading log and becomes an argument about the state of the field.

Synthesis vs Summary: What Actually Separates Them
A summary answers the question “what does this source say?” Synthesis answers a different question: “what do these sources, taken together, tell me about my topic?” The unit of a summary is the source. The unit of synthesis is the idea.
Here is the same material written both ways so the difference is concrete.

Studies of traditional undergraduates report either a decline (Smith, 2021) or no measurable change (Patel, 2022), while work with older learners finds a clear improvement (Nguyen, 2023). Taken together, these results suggest that learner age, rather than the medium itself, may drive the difference, a possibility no single study has yet tested directly.”
Notice what changed. The synthesis version leads with a claim, groups the sources by what they show, points out the tension between them, and ends by naming a gap. The sources are still cited, but they serve the idea instead of taking turns. That shift is the whole game.
Why Synthesis Feels So Hard
Synthesis is difficult for a reason that has nothing to do with effort. To connect sources, you have to hold several of them in your head at once and notice where they agree, clash, or leave a question open. When your notes are organised source by source, your brain is organised source by source too, and the connections stay hidden.
The fix is to change what your notes are organised around. Once your reading is grouped by theme instead of by paper, the relationships become visible and the paragraphs almost write themselves. The next four steps get you there.
Step 1: Read for the Conversation, Not Just the Content
When you read a paper for synthesis, you are not only asking “what did they find?” You are asking “who is this paper arguing with?” Almost every study positions itself against earlier work: it extends it, contradicts it, or fills a gap it left. That positioning is the raw material of synthesis, so capture it as you read.
For each source, jot down three things beyond the finding: which other studies it builds on or disputes, the method it used, and the specific question it was trying to answer. Those notes tell you where the paper sits in the wider conversation, which is exactly what you need to group it later.
Step 2: Build a Synthesis Matrix
A synthesis matrix is a simple table that flips your notes from source-first to theme-first. Sources go down the left as rows. Your themes, the recurring questions or sub-topics in your field, go across the top as columns. In each cell you write what that source says about that theme, or leave it blank.
The magic is in reading the matrix down a column instead of across a row. A column collects everything the literature says about one theme, which is a synthesized paragraph waiting to be written. A blank stretch in a column is a research gap you can name. This is the single most useful tool for turning reading into synthesis, and it builds naturally on a plain source list. Step 3: Organise by Theme, Not by Author
With the matrix in front of you, write your review one theme at a time, following the columns. Each theme becomes a paragraph or a short run of paragraphs. This is the structural difference between a review that synthesizes and one that lists: a synthesized review is organised around ideas, and every author appears wherever they are relevant, sometimes in several themes.
A quick test: if your section headings are author names or “Study 1, Study 2, Study 3,” you are still listing. If your headings are themes, questions, or debates, you are synthesizing. Step 4: Use a Synthesis Paragraph Formula
Once you know your theme, a synthesized paragraph follows a reliable shape. You do not have to invent the structure every time. Use this four-move formula.
- Lead with the claim. Open with a sentence that states what the literature shows about this theme, in your own words. This is the topic sentence, and it should not name a single source.
- Group the evidence. Bring in the sources that support the claim together, often in a single sentence with multiple citations, rather than one sentence per source.
- Show the tension. Point to where sources disagree, use different methods, or study different populations, and offer a reason the results might differ.
- Close with the gap. End by naming what is still unknown or untested. That sentence sets up the next theme and, eventually, your own research question.
A Worked Example: Three Sources Into One Paragraph
Suppose your theme is “does peer feedback improve student writing?” and your matrix column holds three sources. Here is the raw material, then the synthesized paragraph the formula produces.
Source A: found peer feedback improved writing quality in first-year students, using a controlled trial.
Source B: found weak effects, but only measured grammar, not argument quality.
Source C: found strong effects, but only when students were trained to give feedback first.
Run the four moves and you get a single connected paragraph:
“Peer feedback appears to improve student writing, but the size of the effect depends on how it is measured and how it is set up [claim]. Controlled studies report clear gains in overall writing quality (Source A) and, where students are first trained to give useful feedback, in argument as well (Source C) [grouped evidence]. Weaker results tend to come from studies that assess only surface features such as grammar rather than the quality of the argument (Source B), which suggests the benefit may lie in higher-order revision rather than proofreading [tension and explanation]. What remains unclear is whether these gains hold beyond the first year of study, since the existing trials focus almost entirely on new undergraduates [gap].”
Every source is still cited and represented accurately, but none of them runs the paragraph. Your claim does. That is synthesis.
Common Synthesis Mistakes to Avoid
- One paragraph per source. The clearest sign of a listing review. If each paragraph starts with a new author, restructure around themes.
- Citation dumping. Stacking references at the end of a sentence (Author, Author, Author) without saying how they relate is not synthesis. Say whether they agree.
- Only reporting agreement. The disagreements and the gaps are the most valuable part of your review. Do not smooth them away.
- No voice of your own. If a reader cannot tell what you think the literature adds up to, add topic sentences that state your reading of it.

They are the intellectual contribution your supervisor is assessing.
