Finding good academic sources is a skill, and it is one that nobody explicitly teaches most students. Your professors tell you to “use peer-reviewed sources,” but they rarely explain how to actually find them efficiently.

1. What Counts as an Academic Source
Before you start searching, you need to know what you are looking for. Not everything that appears in a search result qualifies as an academic source.
Academic sources are works written by experts in a field, reviewed by other experts (peer review), and published in scholarly journals, books, or conference proceedings. They report original research, present theoretical frameworks, or provide systematic reviews of existing evidence.
Generally acceptable:
- Peer-reviewed journal articles
- Academic books and edited book chapters
- Conference papers and proceedings
- Theses and dissertations
- Government reports and official statistics

Generally not acceptable:
- Blog posts and opinion articles

- Use exact phrases. Put key phrases in quotation marks. Searching
"cognitive load theory"gives you far better results than searching the three words separately. - Filter by year. Use the sidebar to limit results to the last 5 years. This immediately removes outdated work and surfaces current research.
- Check “Cited by.” When you find a relevant paper, click the “Cited by” link underneath it. This shows you every paper that has cited that work since it was published. It is the fastest way to find newer research that builds on an important study.
- Sort by relevance, not date. Google Scholar's relevance sorting is surprisingly good. It considers citation count, keyword match, and recency. Only switch to date sorting if you specifically need the most recent publications.

PubMed

Web of Science

Citation snowballing is one of the most effective strategies for finding sources that keyword searches miss. It works in two directions:
Backward snowballing: Look at the reference list of a highly relevant paper. The authors have already done a literature search on your topic. Their references are a curated list of important prior work. Go through the list and pull out any papers that look relevant to your question.
Forward snowballing: Use Google Scholar's “Cited by” feature to see who has cited a key paper since it was published. This gives you newer research that builds on or responds to the original study. Forward snowballing is especially useful for finding the most recent work in a field.
The best approach is to start with 2 to 3 highly relevant, recent papers and snowball in both directions. You will typically find 60 to 70 percent of your final source list through snowballing alone.
When to stop: You know you have done enough snowballing when you start seeing the same papers appear in multiple reference lists. This is called “saturation,” and it means you have covered the core literature in your area.
6. Evaluating Source Quality (CRAAP Test)
Not every paper you find belongs in your literature review. Evaluating source quality is just as important as finding sources in the first place. The CRAAP test is a widely used framework for evaluating academic sources:
Currency
When was it published? Is the information still relevant? For most fields, prioritize sources from the last 5 to 10 years.
Relevance
Does the source directly address your research question? Tangentially related papers dilute your review.
Authority
Who wrote it? Are they affiliated with a university or research institution? Have they published other work in the same area?
Accuracy
Is the methodology sound? Are the claims supported by evidence? Has the paper been peer-reviewed?
Purpose
Why was the paper written? Is it informing, persuading, or selling? Watch out for sources with obvious bias or conflicts of interest.
A quick shortcut: check the journal. Is it indexed in Scopus or Web of Science? What is its impact factor? Papers published in reputable, indexed journals have already passed peer review, which gives you a baseline level of quality assurance.
Be cautious of predatory journals. These are publications that will print anything for a fee, with little or no genuine peer review. Warning signs include aggressive email solicitations, rapid acceptance times (days instead of months), and journals whose names closely mimic well-known publications.
7. Managing Your Sources
Finding sources is only half the battle. You also need to organize and manage them. If you are working with more than 10 sources, a reference manager is not optional. It is essential.

8. How Many Sources Do You Need?
