Dissertation and thesis word limits by university
Most universities allow a PhD thesis of up to 100,000 or 80,000 words: of the 30 universities here whose own rules give a figure, 17 say 100,000 and 11 say 80,000. The median for a research master's thesis is 45,000 words (23 universities). Undergraduate and taught master's limits are mostly set by faculties and departments: 7,000 to 25,000 words for an undergraduate or honours dissertation and 8,000 to 30,000 for a taught master's dissertation in the handbooks here.
66 universities in South Africa, the UK, Australia, Ireland, the US and Canada. Every figure quotes and links the document it comes from. Last checked 4 October 2026. Free to download as a CSV under CC BY 4.0.

Undergraduate and honours: no university here sets one figure for all its departments. The faculty and department handbooks here give 7,000 to 25,000 words.
United States and Canada: most graduate schools state pages or set no limit, so they have no column of their own. The University of British Columbia (Okanagan campus) and the University of New Brunswick give a university-wide word figure, which counts in the All column; the rest of their figures are in the table only.
How the averages are worked out: one figure per university and level, from university-wide rules, including a university's own approximate length (UNISA's Senate gives a rough estimate rather than a cap). Where a rule differs by faculty, the largest figure counts. Minimums, page limits, guidance pages and older editions are left out. With an even count, the median is the midpoint of the middle two, rounded to the nearest 1,000.
9 of these figures count the reference list inside the limit, so the averages mix limits that include it and limits that leave it out.
Does the word count include references?
The reference list usually does not count. Of the 23 universities here whose university-wide rules say whether the reference list counts, 18 leave it out and 4 count it (Deakin University, Dublin City University, University of Galway and University of Nottingham), and 1 differs by faculty (University of Glasgow). Footnotes: 12 count them and 7 leave them out. In-text references are another matter: some rules count them while leaving the reference list out, as at Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the University of Cambridge's Department of Architecture and the University of Edinburgh (university-wide and in its School of Social and Political Science). Each row in the table quotes the sentence, so check your own. Over the limit? Read How to cut a literature review down to the word limit.
Literature review guidance in the handbooks
Only 13 of the 66 universities here give the literature review a length of its own, mostly on a faculty, department or study-skills page, and they measure it in different ways, so there is no single average. As a share of the whole thesis, the University of Essex's Department of Language and Linguistics gives up to a third and UNSW Sydney's study guides give 8% to 30%.
As a share of the whole
- University of the Witwatersrand, Faculty of Health Sciences (research report, Masters dissertation and thesis): “As a rule of thumb, general information and the references should comprise approximately 20% of the write-up, the literature review and introduction about 25%, the materials and methods about 25%” introduction and review together Source Checked 4 Oct 2026
- London School of Economics, Department of Media and Communications (MSc dissertation (MC499)): “First, the relevant research literature should be critically reviewed (approx. 2,500 words), leading to a specification of the research questions or hypotheses.” share of the whole thesis, worked out by Litrevu Source Checked 4 Oct 2026About 25%: 2,500 of the 10,000 words the section lengths assume.
- University of Essex, Department of Language and Linguistics (MA dissertation): “Generally, for empirically-based dissertations, not more than a third of the whole dissertation should be literature review, but clearly this does not apply to theoretical or bibliographic studies.” share of the whole thesis, worked out by Litrevu Source Checked 4 Oct 2026A third, coded as 33%.
- University of Hull, Library, Dissertations & projects guide (literature-based project): “As a general rule, the introduction is usually around 5 to 10 per cent of the word limit; each chapter around 15 to 25 per cent; and the conclusion around 5 per cent.” per themed chapter Source Checked 4 Oct 2026Quoted by the guide from Bryan Greetham, How to Write Your Undergraduate Dissertation. In a literature-based project each themed chapter is literature review.
- UNSW Sydney, Engineering (example in Academic Skills, Thesis FAQs) (honours thesis): “Engineering Intro: 3-10% Literature Review: 8-30%” share of the whole thesis Source Checked 4 Oct 2026
- UNSW Sydney, School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (example in Academic Skills, Thesis FAQs) (honours thesis): “Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences Intro (including literature review): 15%” introduction and review together Source Checked 4 Oct 2026
- UNSW Sydney, Academic Skills, Literature review (honours thesis and postgraduate thesis): “Unless your School specifies the length, you can use the following as a rough guide: Around 15-30% of the whole thesis OR Your thesis is expected to be 60% your own work. If your literature review is more than 40% of your thesis, it’s probably too long.” share of the whole thesis Source Checked 4 Oct 2026
In words
- University of KwaZulu-Natal, School of Medicine (MMedSc thesis by manuscript and PhD thesis by manuscript): “Chapter 1. Introduction and literature review ... The length of this chapter should be about 3000 to 4000 words, corresponding to approximately 8 to 10 pages of 1.5-line-spaced text. This excludes the bibliography.” Source Checked 4 Oct 2026
- University of Pretoria, Faculty of Health Sciences (master's in publication format and PhD in publication format): “Literature review/ Chapter 2 As per target journal authors' guidelines” Source Checked 4 Oct 2026The guideline sets chapter lengths for a thesis in publication format; it gives the literature review no length of its own.

How many sources handbooks expect
9 handbooks give a number of sources, each for one programme or level, so there is no average.

- Version 1.0, 6 October 2026: first release, 66 universities, 229 figures.
How we collected it
We read each university's own documents: regulations, policies, yearbooks, faculty and department handbooks, and library or academic-skills pages, which are labelled Guidance. For every figure we copied the sentence it appears in, word for word, with the document's title, its date and its link, and the date we read it.
A script checked every quotation against a saved copy of its source, and a test checks that every number in the table appears in its own quotation. Where we worked a number out ourselves, such as a share from section lengths, the row says so.
Some university sites block automated readers. We read those documents from the Internet Archive and label each one with the date of the copy we read.
We do not convert pages to words, average different kinds of figure, or fill a gap from a search result. Where two editions disagree, the newer one wins. Where a newer edition exists that we could not read, the row is marked Older edition and left out of the averages.
We re-check every source monthly and re-read each one every academic year. The version number and the changelog say what changed.
A note on terms: in South Africa and the UK a master's is usually a dissertation and a PhD a thesis, while in the US a dissertation is doctoral. South Africa also has mini-dissertations, minor dissertations, research reports and half theses for coursework master's. The table keeps each handbook's own term.
Limits of this data
- A snapshot. Handbooks change every academic year; every row shows its document's date and the day we read it.
- Faculty, department and programme limits often differ from the university's. Each row says which it is, and only university-wide rules go into the averages.
- What counts differs. Some limits include the reference list and some leave it out; the What it counts column says, where the handbook does.
- Most US and Canadian figures are pages, and are not converted to words.
- Literature review guidance is rare and measured in different ways, so there is no average for it.
- Older documents are marked. The averages take the largest limit a university allows, which overstates rules that differ by faculty, such as Birmingham's.
- Litrevu is not affiliated with any university. Your handbook and supervisor decide. Corrections to [email protected].
Universities we could not check
We tried these and could not read a current figure. Nothing here is filled from a search result.
- University of Pretoria, South Africa: The General Academic Regulations (G30 to G55) and any university-wide length rule, and the Zoology and Entomology and Theology submission guides. The university's website refuses automated readers, and the Internet Archive has no usable copy of these pages. Tried 4 October 2026.
- University of Pretoria, South Africa: Department of Civil Engineering guidelines for reports, dissertations and theses. The document is no longer online. Tried 4 October 2026.
- University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa: School of Education library guide, Writing and Presenting your work. The page is no longer online. A search result quoted a figure from it, which we did not use. Tried 4 October 2026.
- University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa: A university-wide (Senate) thesis length rule. None found: only faculty and school documents give a length. Tried 4 October 2026.
- University of Johannesburg, South Africa: The Higher Degrees Policy and the current Faculty of Humanities policy. The university's website refuses automated readers; only older copies in the Internet Archive could be read. Tried 4 October 2026.
- Stellenbosch University, South Africa: The older Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences postgraduate guideline. No longer online. The faculty's current guidelines replace it, and the table quotes them. Tried 4 October 2026.
- University College London, United Kingdom: The current edition of the Academic Manual, Chapter 5 (research degree regulations). The university's website refuses automated readers and the Internet Archive has no copy of a newer edition, so the table shows the 2023-24 edition, marked Older edition. Tried 4 October 2026.

Questions
Does the dissertation word count include references?
The reference list usually does not count. Of the 23 universities here whose university-wide rules say, 18 leave the reference list out and 4 count it (Deakin University, Dublin City University, University of Galway and University of Nottingham), and 1 differs by faculty (University of Glasgow). Your own handbook decides, and each row in the table above quotes what it says.
How many words is a PhD thesis in the UK?
Usually up to 80,000 or 100,000 words. Of the 12 UK universities here whose regulations set a PhD limit, 7 allow 100,000 (Durham University, King's College London, University of Edinburgh, University of Exeter, University of Glasgow, University of Leeds and University of Nottingham) and 4 allow 80,000 (University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, University of Manchester and University of Warwick); the University of Southampton allows 75,000. At the University of Nottingham, the PhD limit counts the reference list; at the University of Glasgow it depends on the faculty or college; 7 of the others leave it out and 3 do not say.
How many words is a PhD thesis in Australia?
Up to 80,000 or 100,000 words. Of the 10 Australian universities here whose regulations set a PhD limit, 6 allow 100,000 (Australian National University, Deakin University, Macquarie University, University of Melbourne, University of Western Australia and UNSW Sydney) and 4 allow 80,000 (Adelaide University, Monash University, University of Queensland and University of Sydney). The University of Melbourne suggests aiming for about 80,000 words even though it allows 100,000, and Deakin University's limit includes the bibliography, appendices and notes.
How long is a master's dissertation?
It depends on the kind of master's. A taught or coursework master's dissertation runs from 8,000 to 30,000 words in the handbooks here, and King's College London's framework puts a 60-credit dissertation at normally 12,000 to 15,000 words across the university. A research master's thesis is longer: the median limit is 45,000 words across 23 universities, and 60,000 for an MPhil (16 universities).
What is a mini-dissertation, and how long is it?
In South Africa it is the research part of a master's degree by coursework, also called a minor dissertation, a research report or a half thesis. UNISA's Senate estimates 10,000 to 15,000 words; North-West University's Faculty of Law prescribes 20,000; the University of Johannesburg's Faculty of Humanities has examiners read 20,000 and accepts nothing over 22,000; and Rhodes University puts a half thesis at about 20,000 to 30,000. A full research master's dissertation at UNISA is about 25,000 to 45,000 words.
What happens if my dissertation goes over the word limit?
Most regulations allow nothing over the limit without permission. The University of Cape Town allows a concession of 10% over its 80,000-word doctoral limit, up to 88,000 words. The University of Sydney lets a doctoral thesis run up to 20,000 words over, with the written permission of the Dean or the Associate Dean. The University of Wollongong says the informal +10% rule does not apply to its psychology honours theses. If you are over, read How to cut a literature review down to the word limit.
Do handbooks say how long the literature review should be?
Rarely. Only 13 of the 66 universities here give the literature review a figure of its own, and they measure it differently. UNSW's academic skills guide suggests around 15 to 30% of the whole thesis and calls more than 40% probably too long; the University of Kent puts a PhD review at perhaps 8,000 to 10,000 words, a Master's at around 2,000 to 3,000 and an undergraduate review at no more than 2,000. To size your own, use the Dissertation Word Count Calculator, or read How long should a literature review be?
Does the literature review need its own chapter?
Not always. McGill University says the review can sit in the introduction, in a chapter of its own or across several chapters. The Australian National University notes that many theses have a brief review in the introduction and a longer chapter after it, and that in science theses a review in the introduction alone may be enough. The University of Edinburgh's School of Social and Political Science tells master's students they need not devote an entire chapter to a formal literature review, and the University of KwaZulu-Natal's College of Health Sciences folds it into the introduction within the word count.
Why do US and Canadian dissertations not have a word limit?
Most US and Canadian graduate schools describe length in pages, or set none. Harvard's graduate school says most dissertations are 100 to 300 pages, and McGill University sets no page limit for a doctoral thesis while treating 150 pages as the maximum for a master's. Departments fill the gap: Princeton's Department of Politics caps a senior thesis at 120 pages, and the University of Toronto's Department of English sets 50,000 to 100,000 words for a PhD. We do not convert pages to words, because words per page depend on spacing and font.
Is this my university's official rule?
No. Litrevu is not affiliated with any university. Each figure quotes and links the document it comes from, with that document's date and the date we read it, and each row says whether it is a university rule or one faculty's, department's or guidance page's figure. Your module guide, assessment brief or supervisor overrides it. If you spot a change, email [email protected].
