
How to Write a Methodology Section (Complete Guide with Examples)

Everything you need to write a methodology section your supervisor will approve. Research design, data collection, analysis, ethics, templates, and the mistakes to avoid.
The methodology section is the part of your thesis or research paper where you explain exactly how you did your study. What approach you used, how you collected data, how you analyzed it, and why you made those choices.
Sounds straightforward, right? In theory, yes. In practice, students get stuck on the methodology section more than almost any other part of their paper. Not because the concepts are hard, but because nobody teaches you how to actually write one.
Your supervisor says “write your methodology chapter” and you're left wondering: How detailed should I be? Do I justify every choice? What order do I put things in? How long should it be?

What Is a Methodology Section?
A methodology section tells your reader how you conducted your research. It covers your research design, data collection methods, analysis approach, and any ethical considerations. The goal is to give enough detail that another researcher could replicate your study.
That replicability part is key. Your methodology is not a diary entry about what happened. It is a precise description of what you did and why you did it. Every choice needs a justification.
Think of it this way: your introduction says what you are studying and why. Your methodology says how. Your results say what you found. Without a clear methodology, your results have no credibility. A reader cannot trust your findings if they do not understand how you arrived at them.
The methodology section answers four questions:
- What did you do? (research design and approach)
- How did you do it? (data collection and procedures)
- Who or what did you study? (sampling and participants)
- Why did you make these choices? (justification)
If your methodology section answers all four clearly, you are in good shape. If it skips the “why,” your supervisor will send it back.
Qualitative vs Quantitative vs Mixed Methods
Your research design is the foundation of your entire methodology section. Choosing the right one depends on your research question, not your personal preference.
Qualitative Research
Qualitative research explores experiences, meanings, and perspectives. It produces non-numerical data: interview transcripts, field notes, documents, images.
Use it when: You want to understand the “how” or “why” behind a phenomenon. Your research question starts with words like “explore,” “understand,” or “describe.” There is limited existing research on the topic.
Common methods: Semi-structured interviews, focus groups, ethnography, case studies, document analysis.
Analysis approaches: Thematic analysis (most common), grounded theory, content analysis, narrative analysis, interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA).
Quantitative Research
Quantitative research measures variables and tests hypotheses using numerical data and statistical analysis. It produces numbers: survey scores, test results, measurements.
Use it when: You want to measure something, test a relationship between variables, or generalize findings to a larger population. Your research question asks “how much,” “how many,” or “what is the relationship between.”
Common methods: Surveys with closed-ended questions, experiments, quasi-experiments, secondary data analysis.
Analysis approaches: Descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, regression analysis, correlation, chi-square tests, structural equation modeling.
Mixed Methods Research
Mixed methods combines qualitative and quantitative approaches in a single study. This gives you both the depth of qualitative data and the breadth of quantitative data.
Use it when: One method alone cannot fully answer your research question. You want to validate qualitative findings with quantitative data (or vice versa). Your research involves a complex problem that benefits from multiple perspectives.
Common designs: Sequential explanatory (quantitative first, then qualitative to explain results), sequential exploratory (qualitative first, then quantitative to test findings), and convergent (both collected simultaneously and compared).
Quick decision guide:
If your research question asks “what” or “how much,” go quantitative. If it asks “how” or “why,” go qualitative. If it asks both, consider mixed methods. When in doubt, check what methods recent papers in your field have used for similar questions.
The 5 Subsections Every Methodology Needs
Every methodology section, regardless of discipline or research type, covers the same core components. The depth and emphasis will vary depending on your study, but the building blocks are the same.
1. Research Design
This is the big-picture overview of your approach. Are you doing qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods research? Is it experimental, correlational, descriptive, or exploratory? Is your study cross-sectional or longitudinal?
State your design clearly in the first paragraph, then explain why it is appropriate for your research question. This is where you connect your methodology to your research objectives.
Example:
“This study employed a qualitative exploratory design to investigate how first-generation college students experience the admissions process. An exploratory approach was chosen because limited prior research exists on this specific population, making hypothesis testing premature (Creswell, 2018).”
2. Data Collection Methods
Describe exactly how you gathered your data. If you used surveys, describe the survey instrument, the number of questions, the response scale, and how it was distributed. If you conducted interviews, explain the format (structured, semi-structured, unstructured), how long they lasted, and where they took place. If you used existing datasets, describe the source, the variables you extracted, and the time period covered.
Be specific. “I collected data using a survey” is not enough. Compare these two versions:
Too vague:
“Data were collected using an online survey.”
Specific enough:
“Data were collected using a 32-item Likert-scale survey administered online via Qualtrics over a four-week period (March 1 – March 28, 2024). The survey comprised three sections: demographics (8 items), learning engagement (14 items), and self-efficacy (10 items).”
3. Sampling Strategy
Who or what did you study, and how did you select them? Describe your target population, your sampling method (random, stratified, purposive, convenience, snowball), your sample size, and your inclusion and exclusion criteria.
If your sample size is small, justify it. For qualitative research, you can reference data saturation. For quantitative research, you should include a power analysis or cite sample size guidelines for your statistical method.
Common sampling methods at a glance:
- Random sampling: Every member of the population has an equal chance of selection. Gold standard for quantitative studies.
- Purposive sampling: Participants selected based on specific criteria. Common in qualitative research.
- Convenience sampling: Participants selected based on availability. Easy but introduces bias. Acknowledge this in your limitations.
- Snowball sampling: Existing participants recruit future participants. Useful for hard-to-reach populations.
4. Data Analysis
Explain how you processed and analyzed your data. For quantitative studies, describe the statistical tests you used (t-tests, ANOVA, regression, chi-square) and the software (SPSS, R, Stata, Python). For qualitative studies, describe your analysis method (thematic analysis, grounded theory, content analysis, discourse analysis) and the coding process.
Do not just name the method. Explain the steps. For thematic analysis, describe how you coded the data, how you identified themes, and how you refined them. For regression analysis, state your dependent and independent variables, any control variables, and how you checked assumptions.
Example (qualitative):
“Interview transcripts were analyzed using Braun and Clarke's (2006) six-phase thematic analysis. Initial codes were created line-by-line, then grouped into candidate themes. Themes were reviewed against the coded extracts and the full dataset, refined, and named. NVivo 14 was used to manage the coding process. A second researcher independently coded 20% of the transcripts, yielding an inter-rater agreement of 87%.”
5. Limitations and Ethical Considerations
If your research involves human participants, you need to address ethics. At minimum, cover informed consent, anonymity and confidentiality, data storage and protection, and ethics board approval (IRB or equivalent). Even if your research does not involve human subjects, include a brief statement explaining why ethical approval was not required.
Every methodology has limitations, and your supervisor knows this. Acknowledging them does not weaken your paper, it strengthens it. Common limitations include small sample size, convenience sampling, self-reported data, geographic constraints, and time limitations. State each limitation, explain how it might affect your results, and describe what you did to mitigate it.
Some supervisors prefer limitations at the end of the methodology chapter. Others want them in the discussion section. Check your department's guidelines or ask your supervisor directly.

1. Being too vague
“I collected data using interviews” tells your reader almost nothing. How many interviews? How long? What format? With whom? Vagueness is the number one reason methodology sections get sent back for revision. When in doubt, add more detail.
2. Not justifying your choices
It is not enough to state what you did. You need to explain why. Why qualitative instead of quantitative? Why semi-structured interviews instead of surveys? Why this sample size? Every methodological choice should be backed by a reason, ideally supported by a citation.
3. Confusing methodology with methods
Methodology is the overall strategy and rationale for your research approach. Methods are the specific tools and procedures you used. Your methodology section should include both, but many students jump straight into methods without first establishing the broader methodological framework.
4. Forgetting validity and reliability
For quantitative studies, you need to address the reliability and validity of your instruments. For qualitative studies, you need to address credibility and trustworthiness (member checking, triangulation, thick description). Skipping this makes your methodology look incomplete.
5. Writing a textbook chapter instead of describing your study
Your methodology section should describe what you did in your specific study, not everything there is to know about qualitative research or regression analysis. A brief definition of your method is fine, but do not spend three pages explaining what thematic analysis is in general.
6. Hiding limitations
Every study has limitations. Your supervisor knows this. Your examiner knows this. Pretending your methodology is flawless hurts your credibility more than honestly acknowledging its weaknesses. Name the limitations, explain how you mitigated them, and move on.

3.1 Research Design: State your qualitative approach (e.g., phenomenological, grounded theory, case study, ethnographic). Justify why this approach fits your research question.
3.2 Participants and Sampling: Describe your participant criteria, sampling method (typically purposive), sample size, and recruitment process. Justify your sample size with reference to data saturation.
3.3 Data Collection: Describe your interview or observation protocol. Include question types, interview length, setting, and recording method. Attach your interview guide as an appendix.
3.4 Data Analysis: Describe your analysis method (e.g., Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis). Explain the coding process: initial codes, categories, themes. Name any software used (NVivo, Atlas.ti).
3.5 Trustworthiness: Address credibility (member checking, peer debriefing), transferability (thick description), dependability (audit trail), and confirmability (reflexivity).

Quantitative Methodology Template
3.1 Research Design: State your design (e.g., experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, cross-sectional survey). Identify independent and dependent variables.
3.2 Population and Sampling: Define target population, sampling frame, sampling method (random, stratified), and sample size. Include power analysis if applicable.
3.3 Instrumentation: Describe your survey or measurement instrument. Report reliability (Cronbach's alpha) and validity (content, construct, criterion). Cite the original instrument authors.
3.4 Data Collection Procedures: Describe distribution method, response rate, time period, and data cleaning process.
3.5 Data Analysis: State the statistical tests used and why. Describe assumption checks (normality, homogeneity of variance). Name the software and significance level (e.g., p < 0.05).
3.6 Ethical Considerations: IRB approval, informed consent, data anonymization.
Mixed Methods Methodology Template
3.1 Research Design: State your mixed methods design (sequential explanatory, sequential exploratory, or convergent). Explain why mixed methods is necessary and which phase takes priority.
3.2 Quantitative Phase: Follow the quantitative template above. Cover sampling, instrumentation, data collection, and analysis for this phase.
3.3 Qualitative Phase: Follow the qualitative template above. Cover participants, data collection, and analysis for this phase.
3.4 Integration: This is the part most students miss. Explain how you combined or compared the two sets of findings. Did qualitative data explain quantitative results? Did you use a joint display table? This section is what makes it mixed methods instead of two separate studies stapled together.
3.5 Ethical Considerations: Cover ethics for both phases.

If your methodology section is under 1,000 words for a thesis, you are probably not providing enough detail. If it is over 5,000 words, you may be including too much textbook-style background. The sweet spot is enough detail for replication without unnecessary filler.

The methodology section comes after your literature review and before your results. In a typical thesis or dissertation, it is Chapter 3. In a journal article, it usually appears right after the introduction or literature review.

Write your methodology section in the past tense. You are describing what you already did, not what you plan to do. The only exception is a research proposal, where you write in the future tense because the study has not happened yet.
