Evidence gap
Findings from different studies conflict, or the evidence is too thin to draw a firm conclusion. The field needs more or better data before anyone can say for sure.
Population gap
A question has been studied in one group but not another. A treatment tested on adults but not adolescents, a behaviour studied in the United States but not in your country.
Method gap
A topic has only been approached one way. Everyone has run surveys but nobody has done interviews, or every study is cross-sectional and none follows people over time.
Theoretical gap
A phenomenon has been observed but not explained, or an existing theory has never been applied to it. The facts exist, but the framework to make sense of them does not.
Practical or knowledge-application gap
Research says one thing but practice does something else, or findings from the lab have never been tested in a real setting. The knowledge exists but has not been put to work.
Contradictory gap
Two or more credible studies reach opposite conclusions and nobody has resolved why. Reconciling that disagreement is a contribution in itself.

1. Start from recent reviews, not individual papers

2. Read the limitations and future work sections first
This is the single most useful habit for finding gaps. Near the end of almost every empirical paper, authors admit what their study could not do and what should be studied next. That is a gap handed to you by the people who know the topic best. Copy those sentences into a document as you go. Patterns appear fast.
3. Log every study in a synthesis matrix

Where Gaps Hide in a Paper
Once you know where authors leave gaps, you can go straight to those parts of a paper and read them first. A few reliable spots.
The limitations section
Authors state plainly what their study could not do: a small sample, one setting, a single method, a short time frame. Each limitation is a door someone else can walk through.
The future work or recommendations section
Look for phrases like “future research should,” “further work is needed,” and “this should be replicated in.” These are gaps stated out loud.
The end of the discussion
When authors compare their results with earlier studies, disagreements surface. An unresolved contradiction between two papers is a contradictory gap you can build on.
The introduction of a very recent paper

Notice that every strong version does three things: it says what is already known, it names precisely what is missing, and it hints at why closing the gap is worth the effort. That structure, known then missing then why, is the template for a gap statement in your own paper.
From Gap to Research Question
A gap and a research question are two sides of the same coin. The gap says what is missing; the question asks how to fill it. Once your gap is sharp, the question often writes itself. “No study has measured this in working professionals” becomes “How does hybrid working affect productivity in working professionals in mid-sized software firms?”

Keep a running “gap log” as you read: one line per paper noting what it could not do. After ten or fifteen papers you will have a list of candidate gaps in your own words, and the strongest one is usually the one that keeps coming up.

1. Confusing a topic with a gap
“Artificial intelligence in education” is a topic, not a gap. A gap names what specifically is missing within that topic. If your gap could describe a hundred different studies, it is still a topic.
2. Claiming a gap you did not verify
Saying “no research exists on this” is risky. Usually some does, and a marker who knows the field will notice. Search directly for your gap before you claim it, and phrase it honestly: limited, not zero.
3. Picking a gap that is too big to fill
A gap the size of an entire field is not something one thesis can close. Narrow it to a gap your study can realistically address with the time, data, and access you have.
4. Choosing a gap nobody cares about
Some gaps exist because the question is not worth answering. A gap should matter to the field, to practice, or to policy. If you cannot explain why closing it is useful, keep looking.
5. Reading too little before deciding
